They should have also added the ability to tag the thing to the rig so that it can be tracked.

But how would you add the tagging thing in?

They could inject a capsule under the skin. How to do THAT I don't know. They said the thing was indeed agressive, so I know >I< am not going down there to do it... Tough to tag the deep-sea critters anyway, since the water blocks the signal. All the cameras and robots and stuff they use for deep-sea work is run by cable or fiber if not autonomous.
BTW, TW, I like your sig.

Finally.
I've watched maybe 3 different hour long Discovery channel shows on finding the elusive giant squid, and every time it ends with "...maybe next time." or "We were so close, but funding ran out." All those damnable fools in their manned submersibles puttering around trying to catch it, and all it took was a baited camera. Kudos to that team. Occam's Razor proves itself again.

I heard about that on the news today, creepy!
They said they want to try and capture one now and learn more about it. I don't know if I want to have that job . |

For the tagging idea, my first thought is they could have designed it so the hook was also the tag. Then when the giant squid was stuck on it they could release the hook from the line. That way it will be on the tenticle of the creature and with any luck it would not be able to remove it. As for the signal, they could either just listen for it to come close to the surface once in a while or try to actively follow it with a boat that can deploy a sensor deep into the water to detect it. This is just off the top of my head and maynot be possible in reallity.
Thanks Gambit. I read it in my goverment book a couple of years ago and thought that if more people thought that way then the goverment would work the way it was intended.

Tagging a tentacle is not a bad idea, but squid lose tentacle sections all the time. How long would it keep the tag that way even if the squid couldn't pull it out itself?
Weird tho. I was wondering when they'd get a pic of a live one. |
