I see this a lot as well, Carbondale being a college town.

You would not believe how often I get called a 'cowboy' because of my hat. Never mind that I have such a hat only because I use it to keep the sun out of my eyes, and that I don't have cowboy boots, Wrangler jeans, or a pack of cowboy-killers (Marlboro Reds) in my shirt pocket. I don't even wear a BELT, fer cryin' out loud!

Mind you, it's only the 'imports' that do this. The natives understand the hat, and leave it be.

I will, however, make a small objection to the leather jacket thing. I own a 'biker' jacket, black leather, and all beat to hell, like it's supposed to be. There's two reasons I have it: That particular kind of jacket never goes out of style, and with the liner, it's a great winter coat.

I know what you mean, though. There are some imports here that go out of their way with the leather, to the point that the garment is no longer functional, but only 'stylish'.
