360 is my top so far... But I love this game so much I have decided to post a little strategy guide for those who are too impatient to try and figure things out before they give up on this beautifully crafted (obviously german engineered) mini-game.
KITZUNE'S INSTRUCTION MANUAL. Let's start with the Basics: Pong. Pong is a game of Motion and Angles. The ball hits your paddle and will bounce off in the exact opposite angle it hit from, same with when it hits the bounding walls or the opponents paddle, so it's motion is some what predictable... LEARNING TO CONTROL THE BALL: Pong would be boring if the ball could not be controlled... think about it... the ball starts off heading STRAIGHT to the opponent then bounces back straight... and so on until infinity, because the ball would never deviate from it's straight path. So don't feel as though you are not in control. Your paddle can transfer motion to the ball if the paddle happens to be moving when you hit it. For example: If you hit the ball with your paddle while at the same time moving your paddle upwards, the ball will be knocked upwards. It will take practice to get the timing right, but when you do you will find you can pick exactly where you want the ball to go. Pong works like a game of tennis, at any one time one of the players is "In control" of the ball and the other is simply "returning" the ball. If YOU are in control you must keep the ball going into unpredictable paths so that the computer player does not have time to control the ball and has no choice but to simply return the ball to you directly. And the opposite can be true (and more often is...) The opponent can control the ball and make you move so fast that all you can do is just hope to hit the ball back to him. Try to remain in control of the ball from service to the finish. Never send him an easy hit. LEARNING TO GUAGE DISTANCE AND AIM: It may be called 3-D pong, but we all know it's really 2-D because it's on a flat screen, so it can be hard to judge distances in a fake 3-d world... And this is VERY true in PONG... it's hard to tell how close the ball is if you keep staring at the ball. Take a glance at the walls of the arena... they are glossy and reflective, very cool visual effect, isn't it? Wrong... these are also guages to help you tell how far the ball is away from you. Truth is that you could play this whole game without the visuals in the middle, but simply by the reflections on the walls. You are in control of 4 paddles in actuality that are hitting 4 balls at the same time. The top and bottom paddles and balls move together, and the side paddles and balls move together as well.. so really you are dealing with 2 balls, and 2 paddles. As long as you match the paddles up to catch the balls, you will always hit it. Learn to keep an eye on all five of the balls, and all five of your paddles and you will be better aware of where the ball is going. ADVANCED TIPS Your opponent has been programmed with some actual AI.. including Artificial stupidity.. True he doesn't make many mistakes, but he is capable of being tricked, still. Once you have control of the ball, try aiming it into one corner, then when it returns move it into the opposite corner, this will make the opponent have to move the greatest distance, and give him less of an opportunity to aim. Another trick of aiming is to aim the ball just before a corner so that it will bounce in a spiral pattern on it's way to your opponent, very often he will narrowly miss the ball because he could not judge the movement of the ball correctly. Remember that the ball will go faster and faster the longer you are playing, so try to trick the opponent as early as possible for maximum points and for the less possibility of screwing up. Points are scored based on how long the ball is in play... You get 40 points for getting a quick point on the opponent, 30 for taking a small time, 20 for taking really long and 10 for getting it in at the last possible second. YOu also score 1 point for everytime the ball hits your paddle. And while you are learning, ignore the points entirely and just attempt to beat the opponent as many times as you can. Prepare for the game... Make sure your mouse is centered on a mousepad and make sure you have full range of motion with your hand in it's current position, try moving the mouse from every corner of your screen quickly, if you catch yourself up somewhere you should consider repositioning your hand. Now You are ready to play and beat that damned German Paddle!!!! Good Luck, Comrades! Thanks for the amazing game, Gryphon!!!!!
