No, you don't need the CD to run a server.

Gryph -

Have you hosted one from work yet? It seemed to be okay with T1.

Ack! I guess this is my punishment for not watching the forums.... I get left behind in my own post!

Anyhow, I see what u mean. A server would probably suck up my bandwidth unless I had some sorta router (that would mean 2 more PC's.....), and a server DOES need a video card! Imagine how hard it would be to start it up if the server crashed! As for CDROM, you could just do a network install of Linux or Win2K, you wouldn't need a CDROM at all! For connection, any Cable or Auto-DHCP service would be cool. (Most OS's like those...) Also, we should try to pick a location that's geograpgically equidistant from as many members as possible. It would reduce the overal network times. As to the hardware, I can't help you since I'm gonna be saving my ass off for U of T this septamber. I can help with software or internet troubles. Let me know....

Tribes servers just run in a dos window, there is no starting up the game, so video and cd are not needed.

Default The other solution....

Would be to lease a premade server.

If we had enough people that could pitch in a set amount of cash monthly, we could lease a computer on a high bandwidth connection for our purposes.

In the end, it'll probably the more expensive process, but it would be the quickest solution with the fastest connection. Until we recruit someone that works at a high bandwidth isp.

I just wanted to throw out all the possibilities. Good or bad.

I can just imagine now...

"Do you work for a cable or DSL ISP?"

"Actually I work for a T3 provider."

"REAAAALY would you like to join THZ? We'll give you a free e-mail address."

"What's THZ?"

"A Tribes 2 clan, you'll love it, I promise... : )"

"What's Tribes 2? What's a clan? Do I get paid?"

"CONGRADULATIONS THZ*Dan! You have been accepted into THZ!"

"I have?"

"Yeah, Gryphon said yes, so yer in... now All your server are belong to us!"

"What you say?!"

"You are on the path to destruction."

"You have no chance to survive make your time."

Errrr... what was I saying... sorry I got lost there..

/me starts singing "All your base... base... base... all your base, are belong to us..."

Mas is right in the fact that you're both right. You could use a video and CDROM but they are not needed if you have a LAN, you can just use a remote host of some sort like pcAnywhere to set things up.
