Upgrading computer question...
I want to buy the ASUS P4C800-E motherboard. However the problem is I haven't been paying attention to computers for the last few years and have a question.
This is what it's memory specification is. MEMORY: 4x 184-pin DIMMS FOR PC3200/2700/2100 (DDR400/333/266) up to 4GB (ECC SUPPORT,DUAL CHANNEL) What would happen or is it possible to use PC4000 DDR512 memory instead or do I have to stick with the PC3200? I need to keep my upgrade under $600. ASUS P4C800-E $178 Pentium 2.4GHZ 800 $163 PC4000 DDR 512 x 2 $154 TOTAL = $495 That's what I plan on buying once my memory question is answered. I also need to look for a cheap but good video card too. |

So would it be better to run the PC4000 over the PC3200? Or would there even be a performance differance?

Not much of a performance difference.
Unless you are just plain not able to run current games, you may want to wait a bit for a MOBO that has DDR2 memory. They're supposed to be out in a few months. The other option would be to go with PC3200 memory. The PC4000 stuff isn't worth the extra expense. Save the money on memory by going with PC3200, and put it into a good video card. |

Muahahahaha!!! I'm a devious bastard. My parents wanted to upgrade their computer so all the parts I ordered will be going into it. However the positive side is I will be able to test out the system to see how PS runs on it. Once all the parts get here and I get it built I'll have to keep it for a few days to "burn" test it.
That way I can see how it runs and base my upgrading off it's performance. This is what I finally ended up getting... ASUS P4C800-E Pentium 2.6GHZ 800 PC3200 DDR Matched 512MB (1 GHB Total) If PS runs good with my current video card then I won't worry about buying a super expensive one when I upgrade my computer. Then my parents can get my old GeForce card. Last edited by Mobius; 12-16-2003 at 11:09 AM. |
