It's a word that sort of translates to "geek". Only it was originally used for people that "live" in the reality of anime. These people would seclude themselves and believe that they were actually a part of an anime. Then the word's meaning broadened to apply to people that are enthusiastic about anime. And you can add modifiers to it to describe groups such as computer enthusiasts (computer otaku). but it only applies to those topics related to technology. Although recently people have started to use the word for non-technology type people. (Like say someone that knits... there is an otaku-type word for that person.) |
