This REALLY got my blood boiling tonight...
Tonight was one of my friend's last days in town. He starts grad school at Brown University in Rhode Island, and we had a going away dinner for him. That was good.
We were at Red Robin, having a good time. My roommate was sitting across from me, and my friend was sitting next to him. There were a couple more friends there, and the rest were people that I had never met before. Anyways, my roommate says to me, "Craw, you know you gotta pay this month's rent, right?" I answer, "No. I don't. I paid last months, and the previous month's. I'm not paying rent for this month, it's your turn." (Right away you could see where this is going...) "Yeah, you have to pay half this month's rent, because you owed it to me." Me: "No. John, I paid up even with you as of February. I'm not behind on anything." "No. You don't have a job. And you owe me." This goes on for about five more minutes... Me, "Who cares if I have a job? I do NOT owe you anything!" John, "Yeah you do. I would bet money on it." Me, "Okay. I'm down for 20 bucks." John, "No. 100 bucks." Me, "Fine then." We shook hands...sealed the deal. The thing is, as of February, we were even on the rent. (We alternate months.) The last rent check is due this month. I paid for the months of March, April, and July. Now by my math, there are six months after February, including August. (March, April, May, June, July, August) It seems that I also paid three months rent out of the six. Now...here's the leap of logic.... John owes the last month. I verified this against my checking account when I got home. BUT... -We were at my friend's going away dinner. I don't think he appreciated our argument being brought up. (Luckily it was towards the end of the dinner.) -I was getting to the point of very mad. It took me nearly a half hour to calm down. -On top of this... my roommate had told everyone that we commonly know, that I had not paid the rent. He was the one doing it, and I was always behind. THE LITTLE F#@$ING BITCH! (Just thinking about it really pisses me off.) Now, he went out to a club after the dinner; leaving straight from Red Robin. I went home and double checked all of this with my bank, over the phone. I also had one of my friends come to my place to verify what I had written down as the bank told it to me. I left a note on his door, before going out with the same friends for some drinks at a local pub...still doing the going away dinner thing. I am not sure what I am going to tell my roommate when I wake up. (Well.... actually, I am sure of what I will say, just not how I will say it.) I see two things happening: 1) He pays up the 100 bucks for losing the bet, and acknowledges his mistake. (I strongly doubt he will tell the people that we mutually know what happened.) 2) He doesn't pay. I don't really mind, because it was money that I never really had in the first place. BUT, I know that I would honor the bet if I lost. No matter what I had to do. Things I know for certain: -If he doesn't pay this month's rent, I will be seriously pissed off. -He has shown his 'true colors' so to speak. I no longer consider him a friend. -I will be VERY glad when I have a place to live in that I can call my own. -It may be tough living in the same place with him for the next three and a half weeks. Well, I had to vent this to someone. What do you all think? |

We're both on the lease. I can't kick him out any more than he can kick me out.

Man doesnt it suck when one day a friend shows his true colors and none the less in front of a group of friends, when it could have been discussed back at home. No class at all .
Yeah I was thinkin the same thing about kicking him out, DAMN! You sound like you have things squared away and can prove that you have paid your share. Now lets see how he can handle it. Hopefully he honors the bet, but doesnt sound like the type that would. BEAT HIS ASS!!! Im mad just reading that, some people are just rude . |

I never had this happen to me, but you are exactly right, Asha. This guy is no friend, he isn't even a good roomie. Pity ya can't kick him to the curb like he deserves.
And he had the gall to tell all the ppl you mutually know about this supposed rent you supposedly hadn't paid, at that. I'd be too. In fact, I am anyway. |

Damn it. Beat his ass, then Make him pay the bet and The rent he owes. Can't you talk to the Landlord and verify that your checks have been coming in when they were due?

Yeah. But they only listed the checks as whether we paid or not, not who it was from.
I've got the bank going back a solid year, just in case. They'll send me the records and checks when they are done. Just in case. |

Good. I'd hate to see you lose your deposit because of your buddy not paying rent. As long as you have proof that you paid your 3 of 6 months, if it ever had to go to court, you would win.

I get all my checks returned to me every month, so that could be one way of proof.
Let us know what happens. I don't see how he thinks he can get out of paying. HOW RUDE!
