For those that don't visit the fansites. I guess Dynamix made the newspaper. The following is what was posted.
Zear sends us some news from a newspaper (The Register Guard) that talked to some of the Dynamix workers. ----------------- Lane County is losing 97 high-paying high-tech jobs as computer game maker Dynamix closes its Eugene studio. Dynamix’s parent company, Sierra On-Line, on Monday said it is shutting Dynamix’s facility in the Riverfront Research Park near the University of Oregon as it moves product development and marketing functions to Sierra’s headquarters in Bellevue, Wash. Sierra is part of Vivendi, a huge French conglomerate, which has holdings ranging from water utilities to the movie studio that produced “Jurassic Park III.” Sierra provided no further details about the closure. But employees said a small development group would finish up some projects and the offices would be vacated in the next few months. The layoffs at Dynamix strike another blow to an economy already weakened by the loss of 400 jobs at Komag Inc., a computer hard-disk-drive manufacturer that shut down in April, and a six-month layoff of 600 Hynix workers while the company upgrades to produce a new computer chip. With no other major computer game makers in town, some Dynamix workers on Monday said they’ll apply for more traditional jobs in software development and computer processing. Others said they would seek work in gaming centers such as Seattle and the San Francisco Bay area. Still others were planning to start new computer-game businesses in Eugene. “It’s astonishing that (Dynamix) got cut because of the amount of talent here,” said Dave Georgeson, senior producer and director for Dynamix’s core games unit. “They could be reorganized into something incredible.” Workers said they had been expecting bad news since Thursday, when they were sent home from work around lunchtime and told to attend a meeting at a Springfield hotel on Monday. Last week, rumors were flying around the office and on the internet, employees said. “The signs have been there for some time,” said Dave Stambaugh, computer network administrator at Dynamix for the past eight years. “Things really snowballed last week.” After the meeting, several workers said they were disappointed to lose rewarding jobs at a creative, dynamic company. “It was the best job I ever had,” said Jackie Carpentier, 29, a quality assurance engineer for Dynamix for the past year. “It was fabulous - the people and the work. I was just glad to be a part of it.” Dynamix, which was founded in 1984 by two UO students, first made its mark with flight simulation games. In recent years, the studio developed such titles as the “Tribes” games - in which teams of players fight for survival in a futuristic world - “Trophy Bass Fishing” and the “3D Ultra” series of simulations of pinball, miniature golf and billiards. Sierra said the “Tribes” franchise would be managed out of its headquarters in Bellevue and that it would review other Dynamix titles that are in production. It didn’t comment on the future of Dynamix’s other products. Although the computer game industry is volatile and competitive, some workers thought Dynamix would survive. “We were fairly convinced the because of the success of the (‘Tribes’) franchise, we’d be protected,” said Georgeson, the senior producer and director of Dynamix’s core games unit, which included “Tribes 2.” He and other workers thought executives at Sierra valued Dynamix’s work but that higher-level managers at Vivendi perhaps did not. “I think the people above were making bean-counter decisions,” Georgeson said. Vivendi, a diversified collection of media, software, environmental and beverage ventures, is prospering overall. Last year, it reported a profit of roughly $2 billion on sales of about $37 billion. Vivendi has some 250,000 employees. Dynamix released “Tribes 2” in March and so far the game has made $7.2 million through U.S. retailers, according to NPD Intelect, a market research firm. “Tribes 2” is the 10th best-selling PC game so far this year, said Steve Koenig, senior analyst with NPD Intelect. Given that success, Koenig said, “I’m very surprised to see that Sierra is pulling the plug on Dynamix.” It may be a business decision by Sierra to rein in its subsidiaries and bring them into the corporate office to save on rent and on information technology support costs, Koenig speculated. Another factor, he said, may be the push by computer game publishers to develop content for console systems, including Sony’s PlayStation 2, and two new systems expected to be released this fall: Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox and Nintendo Co.’s GameCube. Last year, U.S. retailers sold $1.5 billion worth of PC games, Koenig said. This year, he predicts sales will be flat or decline slightly because of the emphasis on developing games for console systems. Most of Dynamix’s games are designed for play on PCs, not consoles. The closure of Dynamix caps several rocky years for the company. Sierra bought Dynamix in 1989. Since January 1999, Sierra has been a division of Vivendi Universal Publishing. At its peak, Dynamix employed nearly 200 workers. But when Sierra restructured in 1999, it cut 90 jobs at Dynamix. “Regretfully for us, the series of acquisitions and mergers that Dynamix and Sierra went through over the last few years finally caught up with us here in Eugene, and sealed or fate as just being too small to survive the bigger picture,” said Stambaugh, the network administrator. He said he hopes to line up work at the UO. Workers seemed satisfied with their severance packages. They said they will receive 60 days’ pay, plus two weeks’ pay for every year of service with the company. When Dynamix moves out of the 40,000 square feet it leases at 1600 Millrace Drive in the Riverfront Research Park, it’s unclear what tenant - if any - might move in. Ken Coombs, president of Research Park Associates, the Salt Lake City-based owner of the building, said Monday afternoon that Dynamix had not yet contacted him about the pending closure. Bellevue, WA - August 14, 2001 - Sierra On-Line, a studio of Vivendi Universal Publishing (VU Publishing), announced today a strategic reorganization that will improve operating efficiencies through the consolidation of non-developmental functions. Within the new organization, Sierra will focus on product development and brand management and more closely mirror the operating structures of other VU Publishing studios Blizzard Entertainment and Universal Interactive Studios. "This reorganization creates a more efficient operating model," said Sierra President Michael Ryder. "It also allows Sierra to focus on what we do best -- creating and growing some of the most successful and enduring brands in the business." Key elements of the Sierra reorganization include: · Non-Developmental Functions. A number of key functional areas within Sierra's Bellevue, WA headquarters will be consolidated and managed as corporate functions within VU Interactive Publishing. These moves will improve efficiency and allow VU Interactive Publishing to maximize operating synergies across studios. · Product Development. There will be several key changes within Sierra's internal and external studios. Dynamix, based in Eugene, OR, will be closed and the development of key franchises including Tribes will move to Sierra's Bellevue studio. The Bellevue studio will remain central to the new organization, and will, in addition to Tribes, be responsible for the best-selling SWAT and Hoyle franchises. Concord, MA-based Papyrus, which has a strong heritage in the development of racing games, will continue as a key studio, maintaining responsibility for the NASCAR franchise. Cambridge, MA-based Impressions, will remain a key development studio, responsible for a number of pre-eminent titles including the Ancient City Building series and Lords of the Realm. · Sierra Home. The Sierra Home division, which produces a range of cooking, gardening, genealogy, and publishing titles, will concentrate on the development of its print business. All other product categories will be divested. VU Interactive Publishing will retain Sierra's best-selling Print Artist franchises, which will continue as an important part of the Sierra portfolio and be managed out of the Los Angeles office. In total, 97 positions will be eliminated with the closing of Dynamix, and another 148 will be eliminated in Sierra's Bellevue office. Approximately 20 positions will be transferred to VU Interactive Publishing's Los Angeles headquarters. "While any reorganization involving staff reductions is difficult, there is no doubt that this is the right thing to do for the business," said Sierra President Michael Ryder. "We are now in a strong position to forge ahead with our new and established franchises." |
