Quick question
What kind of rig does it take to make a dedicated server? I'm just wondering, because I hosted yesterday for a while and mine seems up to par. What do you all think?
AMD 2100+ 1 Gig DDRAM clocked at 333 mhz DSL connection at 1225 down, 256 up comp is almost always on except for the occasional reboot. You think it could handle becoming, say, a dedicated THZ server? If so, how do I go about setting it up?

Holy crap! That would make an amazing dedicated server!
I used to run a dedicated server off of a far inferior computer than that and it would run rather well. The internet is the best place to look for server tips... there should be read-me sort of guides that you can find at most Tribes 2 websites... just look around for command lists and whatnot...

Your upstream I think needs to be a bit larger. 256 I think would work for 8 people at the most not for sure. Thats all I can see really that would cause a problem.

I figured out how to start it up, now it needs some testing. And I was wondering if there were any 3rd party admin apps out there, like there were for T1.

Heh. You betcha. The one Gryph and I like is called TotalControl (http://www.lordsofapathy.com/tcdownloads.htm). Get the 2.0 beta version.
That box is great for a server - it'd probably be able to host 2 or 3 games, even. But that upstream bandwidth is the problem. I think FG is right about the player limit. Try it and see.

Error
Got this error message from Total CONtrol 2.0 BETA
"An unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click continue. the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will be shut down immediately. Index was outside the bounds of the array." Clicking continue results in what seems to me like full functionality but I'm wondering where the problem lies. Any ideas?

I saw someone else post that error recently on the TC forums. There was no answer at the time. It may be that you are missing some VB run times. I have never had any trouble with TC, I will see if I can find anything out.
TotalControl is the only admin application that will allow the server to run pretty clean. The other one, TriCon, I dislike with a passion because it clutters the server with a bunch of stuff; oh... and I don't care for the guy that wrote it That rig is very plenty enough to run a dedicated server. Like Gam said, you could run a couple of servers on that rig. I have a comp sitting here just waiting for the internet connection, I am hoping that Iceman will get his ISP thing going and I'll send it down to him. ### |

We'll head on over to the member only section and discuss a name/pass for it and the amount of players and maps you'd like on it then.
BTW- I noticed the error reloads after 'continue' is clicked. Maybe one of you could connect to it and admin for a while. We'll figure this out, maybe even test it out at tonights practice.

Hey Gryph, have you tried any of the local companies?
I wonder how much it would cost... |

I don't know where I would go. I would like a 32 person public server, and some of the server rentals charge $190 a month for that, though they are providing the server. So I am not sure how much someone would charge to store a mid-tower and use up some bandwith.

Hmm...
I know there are a couple of places downtown (Seattle) that do co-location, but I'm not sure of the rates. |
