(Yay for me.)
Once upon a time, MG decided to take a look at his Device Manager. "What's this Unknown Device?" he said, and promptly looked into it. After deciding that it was some bogus hardware that might have been in his computer 3 years ago, he decided to remove it. "It can't do me any harm," he said "so I will just get rid of it." Little did he know this strange device was tied into his mother board. Upon clicking the "remove" button, his computer made a funny noise and coughed up its's cookies, removing ALL hardware and device settings including DirectX Driver and OpenGL. "Wow," said the confused MG, "I guess I will have to reinstall Win2K..." and so he set off on his new journey, hopefully to return with a working computer.

Let me share this piece of wisdom I have taken to heart:

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

It will keep you out of problems like this

But it was broken.... you see Direct3D wasn't working very well, and so I decided to switch drivers. But when I went to do that, it said remove the other one first, but I didnt read carefully enough and installed anyway. The two drivers conflicted and screwed everything up.

AT first i thought this thread stated "my comp is Fuxored"

well i am stupid. :)

anyways i hate win2K :)

:) enjoy your new working Win2K box MG. :)

BTW i hate NT too the only reason why they are at all usefull is the fact that they are networkable on larger scale :)

my unwanted 2 cents :)

heh, Only the smilies are unwanted.
Why do you hate Win2K? It is the best for "power users" like mee!
Why does everyone hate it? I dont see anything wrong with it...

Ps: This thread DOES say comp is fuxored.....(WTF?!?!?!?!!?!?!?)

Win2k is the SLOWEST let me repeate SLOWEST operating system that Microsoft has EVER EVER EVER released. GOD is it slow. You can be a Power User on an Operating system that is faster alot better than you can be a POWER user on a slow operating system.

and it hasnt been out long enough for the rest of the world to proporly beta test it for Bill :)

Well going back to the fixing of Comps i live in a house hold with.. hmm.. 2 in the.. plus 2 in the.. 5 computers and 2 laptops, 2 palmpiolts. Welcome to my work, the whole house is networked up the wazzo and the server is yes running Win2K Server Edition.

But if theres one thing my dad has never learned, even with all these computers is that very simple rule "If it isnt broken dont fix it". This could possibly be the reason why im the one able to laugh at him when he decides to "fix" one of his computers and only makes the problem worse. However its everyones problem when its the server hes playing with  and i make SURE he knows its a problem!!

No sever no net, thank god he hasnt seen any new "problems" lately...

/rant over

First of all, Win2K is not "the slowest" operating system. Windows ME has code optimized for fast booting and stuff (even though it's an eternity compared to BeOS), while Win2K has all the services and devices and stuff. Good crash protection comes with a price you know, all 60 seconds of boot time. I mean, I've come acrross UE's and stuff, but I've never gotten it bad enough that it did a BSOD. (Although there was that one time with Diablo 2...) Besides, Win2K has been the only OS to successfuly come in and out of Suspend (to ram???) without hanging. I really don't bother to reboot, just pop the suspend button. So there!

Second of all, "fixing" your computer is the best way to learn about how to make it work right. How did I learn to fix everything? Trial and error, my friend! And now, I know lots of stuff. (Well, this is the fifth time I've reinstalled a version of windows...)

I was running Win98SE (Suck Edition)

I upgraded my puter to an Athlon 1.2ghz and XMEN-Icemand installed Win2K Professional.

Darn thing is SWEET!! I love it WAY better than 98. I love the ability to cntrl-alt-del to end-tasks.

I hear ya! Microsoft's getting closer to the UNIX-like OS's. Their new task manager is *wai* cool.

Well, I have Win2k Pro on one of my machines. It works flawlessly on the Intel machine. My AMD machine doesn't really count since nothing works on it. :(

I would have to say that even though I rarely had problems with Win98, I'm more impressed with Win2k. The reason is that the only problems I have had with it have been extremely minor to the OS; it won't let a program write to a memory address that is already used, like Win98 will. I LOVE that level of protection. You have to work extremely hard to get Win2k to crash, in my experience. Unix is similar. The Unix kernal won't crash, like kernel32.dll will for Win98, and it's because it manages the memory better.

Then again, Unix is older than I am, and has been developed for a LOT longer than any windows version ever was. Also, Windows OS's have millions of lines of code, all intertwined. Perl is more modular (the language that Unix was originally written in), and it is easier to ID a problem. I'm more understanding.

For the record, I'm going to put Win2k on my dual CPU machine when it is built. >:
Then Linux, and Fusion to do some parrallel computing. >:

To BD: "Oh no! The Devlie!!!"
To Laurelin: This forum aint big enough for th both of us! I suggest we hold a duel RPG-style. (Not to kick, im just joking! Just to see...) Why don't we both create a character in our favorite RPG system, and then run the rules together in a wierd crossover-type system. What i mean is that MY rules govern what I do and what affects damage has on me, and vicea versa. Only the numbers themselves would carry over. Whaddya tink? If you're "game", we'll do it like this: Posts
#1: Choice and desc of game system and character
#2: Character creation and statistics
#3: Any extra stuff (i.e. vehicle or mount, artifacts, items, magic)
#4: First battle setup (terrain, world, initiative)
then the battle begins... post by post for actions.

So? Are you GAME???? (Ps. if anyone else is interseted.....)

EDIT PS: We will also have to declare some sort of mutual limit on the level/exp limit on our characters. I can just see it now... Your Lv 20 Meteor Swarm vs my +10 HEAT resistant armor... sounds like fun.......but could get out of hand.

Go use it thats why we put it there :p .

Mythril Gear

What? Who said D2? I didn't say D2....
I meant the original, Pen and Paper (and dice!) RPGs. THey are classics, not to be confused with the mass-market simplicity of games like D2. Besides, the D20 system *rulez* in comparison to cheezy Diablo stuff....

That was really funny Bug!:lol But what is RIFTS?
Maybe I just have waaaaay to much time on my hands. I should prolly spend it playing tribes or doing something worthwhile like art. Oh well, I guess its all a question of putting my mind to it. I should probably make another go at HF... *searches for tribes original cd*
