I dig that. We could do a detailed map with Google Earth too if we really wanted to, and zoom in on each other's houses :)

Ya this is pretty cool and to see where everyone is from. Now if they kept the zoomed map more updated that would be even cooler but then they'd probably charge ya for that.

I noticed that some of places where I work are "blanked out". Kind of funny when I can guess with some accuracy what was there that day. Heh. It's really weird to do that sometimes; see a google map or something and go, "hey! I know why that's blanked out!"

A little bit of clearance goes a long way :P

Yep, if anyone zooms in on Ft. Gordon, I work in the bottom left big grey blacked out space.

The supreme irony here is that when NASA did the mapping system with WorldWind, you could see all of the fort clearly, but then Google absorbed the project and I guess someone went "OH NOES" and things started to get blacked out.

World Wind and Google Earth are separate ongoing projects. Google Earth was created from Keyhole which was a World Wind clone. Both use images gathered from private sources as well as contracted from public aerial photography companies.

WorldWind is still getting updates, you can get the latest here (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/NASA_World_Wind/1108837558/1).

I stand corrected.

For all your spying needs, correlating unblocked pictures of World Wind with the same locations in Google Earth.

Honestly, my building just looks like another brick building in a sea of brick buildings. Purposefully blocking it out seems kind of counter productive.

"Hey why is that one blocked out?" "Must be important." "Let's blow it up."

lol

I saw a LOT of stuff get pulled off the net after 9/11. I always thought it was stupid because a lot of the stuff that I am referring to is just too damned difficult to do if you don't have the technology to do it. All of the national labs, many universities, and many research topics became classified. It's stupid because it's basically people over classifying things, which leads to waste.

Now that I am "in the business" to a certain extent, I see that there are people that want to classify proprietary systems because they're proprietary; not because they're truly classified.

I'm not the person making those decisions though.

Also, it's funny to note how much of where I work is visible in those maps. And how several years ago you'd probably be thrown in jail for having copies of the same maps.

Well Google Earth data is supplied a bit more by the public sector than WW, I am sure there are flight path restrictions and such which are going to appear that they are purposely blocked out when they actually just haven't been able to obtain the image.
