Graphics Cards!

Well, I have discovered that the cards I put in right before I left, will only play the games that came out right before I left. I have downloaded several demos' and almost all of them do not support my card. I have a GF4 ti 4800 Amy has a 4200. So... Any suggestions on a make and model for a new graphics card. I am not a big fan of Radeon, I still have the stigma of their earlier failures on driver support.. I was thinking a FX 5900 with 256 onboard but not sure of a maker.

I got a Radeon and didn't like the idea of leaving nVidia but they are performing better than nVidia with better prices lately. They have two versions of drivers, one has a bloated .NET slow performing control center, the other has an integrated settings panel like nVidia in the advanced display settings. There are new drivers released all the time comparable to nVidia.

I have the Radeon 9600 XT and it is running Battlefield 2 very good at med-high to high settings.

If anything else needs upgrading, like CPU and mobo ;) it might be time to start looking at getting a PCIx card like a RADEON X800 XT, they are really starting to take hold faster than I expected.

Well, I have a mobo that is running an AMD Athlon XP 2600+ with AGP 8x so hopefully that is still good enough, Amy needs a complete over haul tho.

i don't know too much about graphics cards myself, but the Radeon is one of the more stable i've used. I'm using Laur's (sorry, Aluscia's!) old 8500 (what was that, a first-gen 128m?) and it runs everything current with some shine despite it being an older and slightly underpowered card. I'm running it on a first-generation Intel Prescott 3gHz with 512mb DDR400. i'm more than sure that my other hardware is more than supplementing the underpowered card, but i've never once had a problem with it. in conclusion, romper bomper stomper boo.

IMO, nVidia dropped the ball with the FX (5-) series. For those cards, the Radeon equivalent is a better choice in most respects. However, with the 6 series they did a much much better job. nVidia 6-series cards are kind of expensive still, though.

I like my 6800. I have yet to give it something it can't handle.

yeah i'm continually finding myself thankful for the stability and elasticity of this card... it might take longer to process, but the fact is that the Radeon simply keeps working instead of giving up, like i've had nVidia cards do in the past. the price is usually comparable if not outright better.

as an aside, this is my first departure in this borrowed (thanks again) card from the GeForce, which i was also pleased with. whats their newest innovation, if any? i cant afford a card, but i'd like to do some research regardless :)

They just announced the GeForce 7800 GTX today. Looks promising, but I've not seen any numbers for it outside of what Nvidia says it can do.


But it looks sweet. And I'd bet the top of the line version will go for more than 1000 ($US), because it's new and the other cards out there fill in little price points all the way up to a grand. BTW, Tom's hardware has some bleeding edge news about the card. It's not a whole lot, but it's something.

nVidia has hope - the next gen PlayStation will be using its hardware, and from the PS3 stuff I've seen... nVidia might have a chance with me.

I have the BFG 6800 GT OC witch runs real good. I have it set at Ultra speeds 420/1100.
