Can you get in trouble for using this? If you can down load songs and movies is it pirating?!?! I don't get how this is ok to use.

You could I suppose, but the chances of you being targeted are quite slim.

If you put copyrighted works on a shared system where other people can get it, it's illegal.
If you download copyrighted works from anywhere that doesn't actually have the owner's legal permission to be sharing it, it's illegal.
Almost all the music you can buy (or download) is copyrighted by someone. Almost all of those holders want to get paid for it. A few do give away their work, or samples.
Your chances of being "busted" go up if you put up more songs for download, or if your file list is active all the time. They go up if you use the most popular P2P programs, or their networks. I think Kazaa and shareaza share the same network, but I'm not sure. There are several. Your risks go up if you do these things because the RIAA cronies who're looking to get someone tend to look at the biggest, most popular lawbreakers first, as they are interested in making big examples and headlines.

Shareaza and Kazaa are on different networks. Kazaa is the main target for RIAA as it is the largest network.

I've been wondering if someone will come out with a network that is "protected" in the sense that you only share with people you trust. And also one that has encryption, so file transfers can't be sniffed....

They do, it is called Waste. It was developed by Nullsoft and released on accident and AOL made them take it down. You share Keys with trusted people. The problem is that it is limited to 50 person networks from what I hear.
