Why doesn't THZ have any servers for Tribes 2? That's easy! Beacuse they don't own any!
To the point -
I got ahold of an old 233 mhz computer. Would it be sufficient to run a dedicated server of Tribes 2, or would i need something more along the lines of a 733????

Yeah, we just havent recruited anyone with the resources yet. We have discussed it, just hard to get it organized. I have enough parts to get a 333 running, but I still dont think that is enough. I dont think that a 233 would work for too many people, what kind of connection would it run on?

MG has DSL... it wouldn't work amazingly.

I think we have it figured out that we could get a server built, but the problem is an internet connection that can handle the load.

I got an spare 600MHz, the only prob is that it has an on-borad vid card

That wouldn't happen to be an Intel Celeron, would it? Maybe refurbished by HP? (:lol... Mazzy, we had the same comps)

Ghryphen

Actually for a sever, it doesnt even need a video card, or sound card. Just Case, Ram, Mobo, Cpu, Net card, Hardrive. Doesnt really need drives like floppy or cdrom either.

Aluscia
06-03-2001, 03:33 PM
Although, for ease of setting up software, a CDROM is good, right? THey're pretty dirt cheap right now.

Maz
06-03-2001, 03:35 PM
I'm currently using my HP which is 533, the 600 is another PC I have, but I only have an 56K connection rigth now, so thats out, but once I get my DSL, I could get one going for you guys

Ghryphen
06-03-2001, 03:36 PM
Yeah, my point is that you could take one out of the current computer to temp set up the server then remove it. Most setup can be through networking.

Maz
06-03-2001, 03:55 PM
Ya, but my PC already has an MB, CPU, CDROM, RAM, Floppy, onboard sound, onboard video, 56K modem, 10/100 Network card.

So has soon has I get DSL, you guys can get your permanent THZ server

Aluscia

Are you sure it won't suck the life out of your bandwidth? Won't it screw around with your internet connections if you're perma-hosting a game on a server on the same internet connection?

Maz
06-03-2001, 05:55 PM
It's gonna suck up my upload for sure, but all I need is the download and it's gonna be passworded for sure, and the only one on it are gonna be you guysand you don't more then 15 members anyways.

Dynomutt

i think it would be a good temporary solution, but when we start scrimin' and get like 30 or more peeps on there.. then well need something with a little more juice in the connection area.

Got bored at work and decided to forum whore a bit. :)

Mazzy what is your DSL connection gonna be? I'm running 768k x 768k right now and I have a 466mhz celeron spare puter sitting around that I use periodicly. I could easily run a server but we found out with T1 that it isn't very stable with over 6 people.

One more question do you need cd to host a server?

Ghryphen
06-04-2001, 08:37 AM
No, you don't need the CD to run a server.

Dynomutt
06-04-2001, 01:31 PM
Gryph -

Have you hosted one from work yet? It seemed to be okay with T1.

Ack! I guess this is my punishment for not watching the forums.... I get left behind in my own post!

Anyhow, I see what u mean. A server would probably suck up my bandwidth unless I had some sorta router (that would mean 2 more PC's.....), and a server DOES need a video card! Imagine how hard it would be to start it up if the server crashed! As for CDROM, you could just do a network install of Linux or Win2K, you wouldn't need a CDROM at all! For connection, any Cable or Auto-DHCP service would be cool. (Most OS's like those...) Also, we should try to pick a location that's geograpgically equidistant from as many members as possible. It would reduce the overal network times. As to the hardware, I can't help you since I'm gonna be saving my ass off for U of T this septamber. I can help with software or internet troubles. Let me know....

Tribes servers just run in a dos window, there is no starting up the game, so video and cd are not needed.

You're actually going to U of T, MG? /me sniffles...:cry :cry :cry :cry I'm going to be SOOOOOO lonely at Mac next year...

Would be to lease a premade server.

If we had enough people that could pitch in a set amount of cash monthly, we could lease a computer on a high bandwidth connection for our purposes.

In the end, it'll probably the more expensive process, but it would be the quickest solution with the fastest connection. Until we recruit someone that works at a high bandwidth isp. :)

I just wanted to throw out all the possibilities. Good or bad.

I can just imagine now...

"Do you work for a cable or DSL ISP?"

"Actually I work for a T3 provider."

"REAAAALY would you like to join THZ? We'll give you a free e-mail address."

"What's THZ?"

"A Tribes 2 clan, you'll love it, I promise... : )"

"What's Tribes 2? What's a clan? Do I get paid?"

"CONGRADULATIONS THZ*Dan! You have been accepted into THZ!"

"I have?"

"Yeah, Gryphon said yes, so yer in... now All your server are belong to us!"

"What you say?!"

"You are on the path to destruction."

"You have no chance to survive make your time."

Errrr... what was I saying... sorry I got lost there..

/me starts singing "All your base... base... base... all your base, are belong to us..."

Aluscia

Kit, I think you're starting to lose it...

Maz

Mobius, from what I've read, I'll be getting aDSL connection, and stop fighting over the vid card and cdrom, I already have some to spare anyways, you both said your point, and there both rigth

Dynomutt
06-06-2001, 10:00 PM
Mas is right in the fact that you're both right. You could use a video and CDROM but they are not needed if you have a LAN, you can just use a remote host of some sort like pcAnywhere to set things up.

Aluscia
06-07-2001, 04:18 AM
All this arguing is moot for now... We have a temp server, thanks to DeLukas.

Maz
06-08-2001, 06:37 AM
Ya but you did say temp, so we still need to figure out how to get a permanent one

Aluscia
06-09-2001, 09:52 AM
My concern is... Do we need a permanent one? DeLukas' server seems to be pretty solid, although not for a BEML 12vs12 match. For that, we would have to reserve the XMEN server, or something. I'm not sure we need to go shelling out MEGA bucks for a server... DeLukas, how much are you paying currently/have payed for your server+connection?

Maz
06-09-2001, 04:31 PM
I don't think he's paying anything at all, it's connected at work

Aluscia
06-09-2001, 04:44 PM
Quit 'yer bitchin then. The fact that he's paying nothing means WE need to pay nothing, which is always good! :) If it should fall through one day, then we'll be in trouble.

Stang
06-09-2001, 06:39 PM
I think people stopped bitchin a few days ago :) .

Notice its only been you and Maz keeping this thread going so you 2 stop bitchin :p .
