I did some googling for you, and came up with something from
this site, which had a lot of information on what you've been describing:
"Perianal gland tumors primarily affect male dogs. They arise in the anal area; most are benign but can cause pain and get infected."
Sounds kind of like what you described. The good news is, it looks like from the information on that site that most of this is treatable. But I do understand how you feel about invasive surgery. Having Bo checked out might turn up something hopeful tho
